NTIF Books World Class Performers

The North Texas Irish Festival is proud to continue its tradition of securing world class entertainers to perform on the nine stages throughout the weekend. For this, our 28th continuous year, we will feature the exciting Celtic music of the eastern coast of Canada; the Maritime Provinces of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

These provinces, also known as Atlantic Canada, have a rich heritage of Irish and Scottish music going back many centuries. In addition they have a strong influence of French and British styles.

Probably the most famous among these Celtic regions is the island of Cape Breton, home to one of the largest festivals in the world, Celtic Colours, and home to one of our headline bands from 2009 who will be returning in 2010, The Barra MacNeils.

Cape Breton is internationally known for unusual styles of Cape Breton fiddling, which is derived from Scottish techniques and the island has produced traditional many internationally renowned performers such as John Allan Cameron, The Rankin Family, Natalie MacMaster, Buddy MacMaster, Rita MacNeil and Ashley MacIsaac. Irish traditional music is also very popular on the island, particularly Irish folk songs.

There are very strong connections between Newfoundland folk music and Irish music, however elements of English folk music and French-Canadian and Acadian music can be heard within the style.

It should be noted that a very traditional strain of Irish music exists in Newfoundland, especially in the primarily Irish-Catholic communities along the southern shore.
